Custom Manufacturing

Grinding, polishing, and diamond turning — with a published tolerance envelope instead of vague promises.

Capability 02

Fabrication Envelope

Conventional grind-and-polish for spheres and flats; single-point diamond turning for aspheres, diffractives, and IR crystals. These are the numbers we quote against.

AttributeStandardPrecisionBest Effort
Diameter range3 mm (0.118") – 300 mm (11.8")
Diameter tolerance±0.10 mm±0.025 mm±0.010 mm
Center thickness±0.15 mm±0.050 mm±0.025 mm
Surface irregularity (PV @ 633 nm)λ/2λ/4λ/10

Radius match (test plate / interferometer)±0.2%±0.05%±0.025%
Aspheric form error (SPDT)±1 µm±0.25 µm±0.1 µm

Values are quoting guidelines at 293 K for typical geometries; extreme aspect ratios, soft crystals (ZnSe, CaF₂), and steep surfaces shift the envelope — ask and we'll tell you honestly.

Process

Two Roads to a Finished Surface

Conventional Grind & Polish
GeometriesSpheres, flats, windows, prisms
MaterialsAll — glasses, fused silica, sapphire, IR crystals
StrengthBest surface quality and irregularity; scales to volume with tooling run at full capacity per batch
FinishTo 10-5 S/D, λ/10 irregularity
Batch discipline: every production run loads maximum tooling capacity — no partial loads. That is how unit cost stays flat from prototype 5 to lot 500.
Single-Point Diamond Turning (SPDT)
GeometriesAspheres, off-axis, diffractives, toroids
MaterialsGe, ZnSe, ZnS, Si, GaAs, chalcogenide, CaF₂, metals (Cu, Al)
StrengthComplex IR surfaces without sub-aperture polishing; fast design iteration
FinishForm ±0.1 µm best effort; surface roughness < 5 nm Ra typical on Ge
When we recommend SPDT: any LWIR asphere, any diffractive hybrid, and any prototype where you want the first article in two weeks instead of six. Diamond-turned Ge often ships with no post-polish at all.
